POLITICS | PUSC picks its presidential candidate. On 19 May the opposition Partido Unidad Social Cristiana (PUSC) held a convention in which it picked Rodolfo Hernández, the former director of the national children’s hospital, as its presidential candidate ahead of the February 2014 general elections. With 30% of the votes counted, Hernández handily defeated his competitor, lawyer Rodolfo Piza, by 77% of the votes to 23%. The PUSC, which is the fourth biggest party in the 57 member national assembly, with six seats, is the first of the opposition parties to name its candidate. While the Movimiento Libertario (ML) which has nine seats in the national assembly has yet to reveal any contenders, the main opposition Partido Acción Ciudadana (PAC), which has eleven national deputies, is due to hold its convention on 23 June where it will select its candidate. The five PAC contenders are:  Epsy Campbell – a former party president, legislator and the running mate of PAC presidential candidate Ottón Solís in 2006; Luis Guillermo Solís Rivera, a political consultant, Ronald Solis Bolaños, a former legislator (2006-2010) and current deputies, Claudio Monge and Juan Carlos Mendoza. The ruling Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN) has already named Johnny Araya, the mayor of the capital San José, as its candidate.
