In Brief – Cayman Islands; Costa Rica

POLITICS | Still no final results in Cayman Islands elections. On 22 May the Elections Supervisor for the Cayman Islands British Overseas Territory, Kearney Gomez,  said that the count of the votes for 18 elected seats in the national assembly held earlier in that day was taking longer than expected. In the previous 2009 election, the United Democratic Party (UDP) took nine seats to the five won by the People’s Progressive Movement (PPM) led by Alden McLaughlin. There was one independent elected. Since then, there have been defections from the UDP, following the December 2012 arrest of former prime minister McKeeva Bush, accused of theft and corruption. Five UDP members then formed a minority government under Juliana O’Connor-Connolly. In the May election, the UDP and the PPM are fielding 12 and 15 candidates respectively while two other political groupings have emerged: the Coalition for Cayman (C4C) and the People’s National Alliance (PNA), which are fielding seven and five candidates respectively. In addition, there are 17 independent candidates contesting the election. Bush, whose next court appearance is due to take place after the election, is still leading the UDP.
