In Brief - Mexico

SECURITY| Army shootout in Tamaulipas. On 16 June in a joint statement the Tamaulipas state attorney general’s office (PGJE) and the Tamaulipas public security ministry (SSP) said that an army patrol had been involved in a shootout with presumptive criminals in the city of Tampico, resulting in the death of one unidentified individual, with another wounded. The statement said that the incident took place at round 12:00pm local time as an army patrol attempted to stop a vehicle carrying two suspicious individuals travelling along one of the city’s main avenues. The vehicle failed to stop and opened fire on the patrol, which gave chase. The wounded victim has been taken to hospital to receive treatment before he can be questioned by the authorities. The violent incident comes weeks before Tamaulipas, along with 13 other states, is scheduled to hold local elections on 7 July; and as such it may add to the mounting concerns about the ability of the state and federal authorities to provide public security ahead of the elections.
