In Brief - Panama, Turks & Caicos

POLITICS | New province. On 29 October Panama’s unicameral 71-member legislature approved a bill creating Panama’s tenth province, to be known as ‘Panamá Oeste’. The bill, which was approved by 58 votes, was first presented in January 2011 by five deputies from the region, with the backing of President Ricardo Martinelli, claiming that it was necessary for the area’s economic and political development. The new province will comprise the five districts of Arraiján, Capira, Chame, La Chorrera (which will serve as the capital) and San Carlos, which had previously formed part of Panamá province, which includes the country’s capital, Panama City.
