NICARAGUA: Alemán's grip over PLC loosens

The leader of the opposition Partido Liberal Independiente (PLI), Indalecio Rodrí­guez, last week swore in 22 municipal leaders and two legislators, all defectors from the Partido Liberal Constitucionalista (PLC), the party of former president Arnoldo Alemán. The new recruits include the former leader of the PLC legislative bloc, Enrique Quiñónez, and point to a weakening of Arnoldismo in congress. However, as is the case with any alternative to the pact between the PLC and the ruling Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN), the future of the latest alliance - which also includes the defeated Managua mayoral candidate Eduardo Montealegre - remains uncertain.
