President gets free hand to deploy military

The last constraint on deploying the military on internal security missions was removed in August 2014, when congress amended the defence law to allow the President to do so ‘to confront any form of aggression, internal or external, that might endanger the sovereignty, independence or territorial integrity of the country.’ This was approved by congress after the most recent attack by the guerrillas of the Ejército del Pueblo Paraguayo (EPP), which has been active in the northern departments of Concepción and San Pedro since 2008.
