Venezuelan electoral registration underway with a bang

Development: On 3 August senior Chavistas registered their candidacies on the first of five days of registration for Venezuela’s national legislative elections due on 6 December, while the national electoral council (CNE) refused the application of a leading opposition politician, María Corina Machado.

Significance: President Nicolás Maduro announced a list of Chavista heavyweights, led by his wife First Lady Cilia Flores, and including popular singers and sportsmen, as his government prepares for what he maintained would be “the toughest battle in the 16 years of the Bolivarian Revolution”. It will be such a hard struggle, Maduro argued, because of the ‘economic war’ being waged against his government. He assured the public that Venezuelan intelligence was setting in motion a special plan to withstand a planned wave of violence “sponsored by the Pentagon” to sow discord and chaos.
