Significance: The provisional results spell the most significant electoral setback for the federally ruling Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) since its darkest day when it lost the presidency to the PAN in 2000. They also confirm that the PAN is back in business after surrendering the presidency to the PRI in 2012 and an underwhelming performance in the elections to the federal lower chamber of congress and assorted gubernatorial and municipal elections this time last year. All in all it is a big boost for Ricardo Anaya, who became the PAN’s youngest-ever president last August at just 39, and it stands the party in good stead for another tilt at the presidency in 2018. The fact that the PAN has never won more than three state governorships on any one election day, and now controls an unprecedented 11 states, underpins Anaya’s own claim to the party’s presidential candidacy.
