Cunha: From House of Cards to The Walking Dead

Eduardo Cunha, the disgraced former speaker of Brazil’s chamber of deputies, is commonly referred to as the Frank Underwood of Brazilian politics, in reference to the Machievellian politician who consistently triumphs over his adversaries through underhand schemes in the US web television polticial drama ‘House of Cards’. But barring a miracle – which is not inconceivable given the former evangelical radio presenter’s influence – Cunha is likely to be stripped of his parliamentary privileges in August, and face trial by a federal court. Once more, there is a distinct likelihood that the judge who will preside over the numerous corruption allegations facing Cunha will be Sergio Moro, who has handed down long prison sentences to many of those convicted under ‘Operation Car Wash’, the investigaitons into corruption at the state-owned oil firm Petrobras.
