Nice attack prompts nerves over Olympics security

Over 85,000 security personnel, drawn from Brazil’s armed forces, the national guard and the police will patrol the city of Rio de Janeiro from 24 July to the end of the Paralympic Games in September. The number is double that contracted by the authorities in the United Kingdom (UK) ahead of the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games, and the mayor of Rio, Eduardo Paes, has insisted that the city will be “the safest on earth” during this year’s Olympic Games. But while the violent crime that has recently surfaced again in the city may not be much of a problem for athletes and visitors, the principal concern of many in the city is the possibility of a terrorist attack, particularly in the wake of last week’s horrific incident in Nice, France.
