Gov’t submits a ‘truthful’ draft budget

The government led by President Mauricio Macri submitted its first draft budget to Argentina’s national congress on 15 September. The draft budget focuses on stimulating domestic economic growth after a tough year of adjustment for Argentina, and with one eye on the midterm legislative elections due in late 2017. To that end, the finance minister, Alfonso Prat-Gay, has revised his budget deficit targets so as to allow for more spending room over the coming year. Key to the government’s electoral fortunes in 2017 will be a fall in inflation, which would restore consumers’ depleted purchasing power.
