Argentina’s Macri patches a deal on ganancias tax

Last week, Argentina’s President Mauricio Macri had been on the brink of a humiliating defeat over an opposition bill proposing changes to the ‘impuesto a las ganancias’ payroll tax. This week the government appears to have turned this around with a new compromise approved in the federal senate. The episode – described by some as an “end-of-year soap opera” – reveals strengths and weaknesses on both sides of the country’s political divide.
