HAITI: Transition process under way

Earlier this month Haiti’s provisional electoral council (CEP) announced final results from the 20 November 2016 presidential election which confirmed an outright victory for Jovenel Moïse, the candidate of former president Michel Martelly (2011-2016)’s Parti Haïtien Tèt Kale (PHTK) party [RC-16-12]. This has enabled the interim government led by President Jocelerme Privet to begin the formal handover of power ahead of Moïse’s expected inauguration next month. Complications nonetheless persist with regard to the contest for the new legislature, the final results of which have also been announced: two of the candidates elected to the senate are unable to take up their seats for different reasons.
