EL SALVADOR: FMLN administers injection of internal democracy

The ruling left-wing Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN) has modified its internal party statutes in order to stage primary elections to select national leaders and candidates for mayor, the legislative assembly and president. The internal institutional changes could serve to refresh the FMLN. Veteran guerrilla leaders, the so-called históricos, currently fill senior positions within the party leadership.
