‘Operation Car Wash’ stalls following death of a leading judge

Teori Zavascki, the justice in Brazil’s supreme court (STF) tasked with overseeing one of Latin America’s most extensive corruption probes, ‘Operation Car Wash’, died on 19 January. Zavascki was killed along with five others during a plane crash near the city of Paraty, Rio de Janeiro state, where he had been on holiday. Eye-witnesses say the plane veered off course, but heavy rains may have obscured its vision.
