US authorities restrict access to El Chapo

Lawyers of Mexican drug kingpin Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán Loera, who was extradited to the US on 19 January, say it has been difficult to schedule regular visits to meet their client. “We are not even permitted to give Guzmán a glass of water,” said one of his lawyers in the US, Michelle Gelent. She claimed US authorities were being “too restrictive” with Guzmán by only allowing him out for one hour per day to do some exercise, banning all phone calls and limiting his access to legal professionals and his wife. However, given Guzmán’s track record for jail breaks in Mexico, once using a laundry basket and twice through hidden tunnels, guards are unlikely to grant any concessions to Mexico’s best-known criminal.
