Renewed moves at OAS

Eight months have passed since the Organization of American States (OAS) decided against application of its democratic charter against Venezuela, opting instead to work in support of continued dialogue between the bitterly-opposed political sides in the country. To little surprise, the dialogue effort went nowhere; meanwhile the economic and social crisis in the country has further deteriorated. With the increasingly authoritarian and militarised government led by President Nicolás Maduro unwilling to make clear whether delayed and pending state and municipal elections will go ahead this year, there are signs of fresh moves at the OAS to censure Venezuela for breach of the charter, which could lead to its suspension from the OAS. One important difference now is that Venezuela is noticeably more isolated in the region, with the likes of Argentina, Chile and Brazil – as well as the new US government led by President Donald Trump – all taking a harder stance against Caracas.
