Santos acknowledges ‘elephant in the room’

The ever-growing regional corruption scandal involving Brazilian engineering firm Odebrecht is now knocking at the door of Colombia’s President Juan Manuel Santos. As part of the ongoing investigations into the corruption ring operated by Odebrecht, through which it paid bribes to public officials across the region in exchange for state construction contracts [RC-17-01], the Colombian authorities have found evidence that the firm provided illegal campaign financing for Santos’s electoral campaigns. So far Santos has maintained that while some officials in his government may have taken bribes from Odebrecht there never was systematic corruption under his watch. However, he now faces uncomfortable questions about his links to Odebrecht that could damage his political legacy.
