COSTA RICA: Arias wins battle of grandees

Former president Óscar Arias (1986-1990 and 2006-2010) emerged triumphant in the battle of Costa Rica’s former heads of state. Arias is the mentor of Antonio Álvarez Desanti, the president of congress, who decisively defeated former president José María Figueres Olsen (1994-1998) in primary elections for the country’s largest political party, Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN), on 2 April, ahead of presidential elections in February 2018.
