Progress and setbacks to Hispaniola bilateral cooperation

The Dominican Republic (DR) and Haiti have signed a new customs information exchange agreement. The agreement will help stop illegal smuggling between the two countries that make up Hispaniola Island and signals progress in both the fight against criminality on the island and in bilateral relations. However, this has been tempered by the DR authorities’ decision to launch a new unilateral initiative to stop the infiltration of the Dominican airwaves by Haitian broadcasters.
