Colombia: Post-conflict security challenges start to materialise in Tumaco

Tumaco, a municipality in Colombia’s south-western department of Nariño, has become the focus of national security concerns. The growing of evidence of increased activity by emerging criminal (Bacrim) and drug trafficking organisations (DTOs) in the area as well as the recent murder of a member of the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) guerrillas amnestied by the government as part of the peace deal signed with the Farc, have concentrated the attention of the national authorities. These two issues – the spread of criminal groups to areas previously controlled by the Farc and protecting Farc members and their associates in a post-conflict scenario – had been identified as two of the major challenges faced by Colombia.
