JEP takes effect, produces controversy

The Jurisdicción Especial para la Paz (JEP), the special jurisdictional entity tasked with implementing transitional justice in Colombia as the country tries to abandon its internal armed conflict, has come into force. Following its approval by the national congress, the JEP has begun the monumental task of analysing the countless crimes committed during the 52-year-old insurrection of the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) guerrillas by the Farc fighters, the security forces, paramilitary groups, and even government officials. The aim is to determine which of these are eligible to be processed under the more lenient transitional justice as agreed under government’s peace deal with Farc. The start of the JEP’s work has not been without controversy, however, as various individuals accused of some heinous crimes have requested to be processed by the JEP.
