Gov’t boasts about job creation record, economic management

Mexico’s President Enrique Peña Nieto used full advantage of the celebrations marking International Labour Day this month to boast about the solid job-creation figures under his government. The president said that this was evidence that his administration has deftly managed the domestic economy in the face of an increasingly adverse international economic scenario marked by concerns that Mexico’s economic relations with the US could suffer following the election of US President Donald Trump. While this may be the case, the fact remains that Mexico’s economy still faces significant challenges that it must contend with starting with the upcoming renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta).
