BRAZIL: Military man to head indigenous rights agency

After two decades of civilian rule, a military man will once again take control of the government’s indigenous rights agency, Funai. This has brought back painful memories of human rights abuses suffered by indigenous people under Brazil’s military dictatorship (1964-1985), when they were treated as an obstacle to economic progress. Human rights groups hope the new nomination is not a sign that history is about to repeat itself.
