Venezuela-Colombia: ‘Provocations’

Tensions between Colombia and Venezuela flared again in mid-May, with the Caracas government accusing Colombia of sending military tanks to the border, which, it said, was “a provocation”. Bogotá responded that the tanks had in fact been stationed along the border ever since 2015, as per joint military agreements between the two neighbours. The Venezuelan complaint came just a day after Colombia’s President Juan Manuel Santos returned from the US, where President Donald Trump dubbed Venezuela “a huge problem” and the US Republican senator Lindsey Graham said that he had asked Santos for approval to send US military resources to the Colombian border with Venezuela.
