Continued progress in anti-poverty efforts
In a report published on 10 May, Peru’s national statistics agency Inei found that the country’s poverty rates fell 1.1 percentage points in 2016 with 20.7% of the 32m population currently considered poor. During that time, over 264,000 escaped from poverty, here defined as those who cannot purchase a basic basket of food and drink. The latest figures are part of a long-running trend for falling poverty rates in Peru. The same report showed that over the past ten years, the poverty rate has dropped by 28.4 percentage points.
