Opponents gun for López Obrador

Rival political parties are struggling to contain their glee at the emergence of a series of videos suggesting that the radical left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) is not immune to corruption. Morena’s leader and 2018 presidential candidate, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has not just denounced corruption and promised to wage a zero-tolerance campaign against it but he has also predicated his expansionary social welfare policy, and health and education overhauls, on netting vast additional funds through expunging corruption from Mexican public life. The federally ruling Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI), the butt of all of López Obrador’s attacks on the “mafia of power” dedicated to plundering Mexico, derived most pleasure from the videos, returning fire with fire.
