PRI retains jewel in electoral crown but unconvincingly

The Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) look set to remain in control of the governorship of the Estado de México (Edomex) following the state elections held there and concurrently in states of Nayarit, Coahuila, and Veracruz on 4 June. Given that Edomex is a traditional PRI political bastion and that it is considered to be a good bellwether for the presidential elections that are due next year [RM-17-04], if the PRI’s victory is confirmed, the chances of the ruling party retaining the presidency next year would be enhanced. Yet the fact that the Edomex election was far from straight forward for the PRI, with its candidate receiving the lowest proportion of votes ever, points to the vulnerabilities that a united opposition front could exploit in the 2018 general election campaign.
