Odebrecht case comes to a head in the Dominican Republic
After weeks of apparent apathy and mounting domestic and international pressure [RC-17-05], prosecutors in the Dominican Republic (DR) have finally presented formal charges against various individuals suspected of being implicated in the government corruption scheme centred around Brazilian engineering firm, Odebrecht. The indictments have rocked the domestic political scene as those named included a sitting minister, national legislators, and prominent politicians from across the political divide. While welcoming the indictments, local civil-society groups continue to insist that the pace of the investigations has been slow and the attorney general’s office (PGR) must do more to clear up the case – including the allegations that Odebrecht provided illegal campaign donations to President Danilo Medina’s 2016 re-election campaign.
