After the staging of the first set of elections of the year, and as the open, mandatory, and simultaneous primaries (Paso) ahead of the October midterm legislative elections approach, Argentina’s centre-right ruling Cambiemos coalition looks to be in a good position to capitalise on the midterm polls. Cambiemos currently has only a minority representation in the federal congress and its objective is to increase its representation, cut into the majority held by the main opposition Partido Justcialista (PJ, Peronists) party, and ideally obtain its first congressional majority. The year’s first electoral results and recent developments suggest that the ruling coalition will have a good chance of achieving its objectives.
