Controversial labour reform approved by congress
The government led by President Michel Temer has secured the approval in the federal congress of one its landmark economic reforms that promises to “revolutionise” Brazil’s rigid labour laws, some of which date back to the military dictatorship (1930-1945). The bill’s approval has boosted investor confidence in the Temer administration, which has pledged to pursue a reformist agenda. However, the initiative is still strongly contested by local workers’ unions, who staged two general strikes in the last few months to rally against the measure.
