Nicaragua: Gov’t claims more security progress

Last month Nicaragua’s Vice President and First Lady Rosario Murillo told reporters that comparative data for the first five months of the year showed that Nicaragua was the safest country in Central America. Murillo’s claims, which were backed up by a report by the national police (PNN) deputy director Francisco Díaz at the end of May, come as the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) government led by President Daniel Ortega has passed controversial legislation which it maintains is necessary to protect citizen security.
