In brief: Mexico

* Thousands of farmers have staged a protest march in Mexico City demanding that the agricultural chapter of the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta) be excluded from the upcoming renegotiations of Nafta’s terms due to start next month. Grouped under the Comisión Nacional de Organsimos Rurales y Pesqueros (Concorp), the protesting farmers say that they fear that the renegotiations could result in the adoption of new sector trade guidelines that could harm them. The protest comes ahead of a meeting between Mexico’s agriculture minister, José Calzada Rovirosa, and this US counterpart, Sonny Perdue, due to take place today (27 July) in the city of Mérida, Yucatán state, to discuss bilateral trade in the agro-alimentary sector. A statement by Mexico’s agriculture ministry (Sagarpa) said that the aim of the meeting was to “strengthen the agro-alimentary trade between the two countries in a context of fairness, openness, and clear rules”, noting that in the first quarter of the year Mexico exported US$12.4bn worth of agro-alimmentary products to the US, a 4% increase compared to the same period last year.
