COLOMBIA: Santos resolute against decertification threat

President Juan Manuel Santos gave his final speech before the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on 19 September. Santos devoted the first two-thirds of his speech to portraying Colombia as one of the world’s few good news stories with the peace accord advancing with the Fuerzas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc). But a good chunk of the final third of his speech appeared to have been written very recently as a direct response to comments by US President Donald Trump last week that he had “seriously considered” putting Colombia on the list of countries that had ‘demonstrably failed’ to make sufficient effort to combat drugs.
