NICARAGUA: OAS to ‘accompany’ municipal vote

The Organization of American States (OAS) this week confirmed that it would be sending a mission to ‘accompany’ the 5 November municipal elections. This is in line with a deal signed between the OAS and the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) government led by President Daniel Ortega earlier this year, aimed at addressing democracy-related fears which have intensified since the general elections in November 2016 (which gave Ortega a landslide victory, albeit in a highly questioned process). The announcement was met with scepticism by local opposition groups and comes as the FSLN-controlled 92-member national assembly approved changes which could make it harder to track voter turnout.
