In brief: Mexico

*Economy Minister Ildefonso Guajardo has suggested that the ongoing process of renegotiating the terms of the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta) could be extended until the end of 2018. The Nafta renegotiations have progressed much slower than expected since their launch in August, amid the considerable differences between the US and its fellow Nafta partners. At the start of the renegotiation process the three Nafta members said that they hoped to conclude the process by the first half of 2018 to avoid it being affected by the campaigning ahead of Mexico’s general election due in July 2018 and the US’s mid-term elections due in November 2018; and to minimise the effects that the uncertainty over Nafta’s future could have on the regional economy. However, after meeting US government officials in Washington DC to discuss the progress of the negotiations, Guajardo said: “These negotiations will take what ever time is necessary. It will be unhealthy to set deadlines…the important thing is to reach a good deal.”
