In brief: Mexico

*The agricultural, land, and urban development ministry (Sedatu) has reported that so far it has delivered 3,766 debit cards to provide financial aid to the 5,974 families in Mexico City that qualify to receive help to rebuild homes destroyed by the major earthquakes that shook central Mexico back in September. Sedatu representative Angel Islava said that this means that the authorities have now provided aid to 35% of those that qualify to receive it from the federal government’s natural disaster fund (Fonden) and the Mexico City government’s contingency fund. Noting that the total amount of aid to be distributed to those that qualify for assistance in the Mexico City area amounts to M$336.3m (US$17.4m), Islava said that authorities have had difficulties in identifying all those that qualify to receive aid and that this has slowed the delivery of the debit cards. However, Islava said that the authorities hope to deliver debit cards to all those qualified to receive aid by 31 December. The Sedatu report came as the Mexico City government announced that so far it has received M$3.6bn from the Foden to help finance the reconstruction efforts in the capital.
