LatinNews Regional Monitor: Brazil & Southern Cone - 5 January 2018

In brief: Brazil

* Brazil’s industry & trade ministry (MDIC) has reported that Brazil exported roughly the same amount of meat in 2017 as it did in 2016. In 2017, the country exported 6,557m tonnes compared with 6,558m tonnes in 2016. The value of exports rose to US$15.06bn last year, up from US$13.89bn in 2016.  This shows the meat sector has recovered from food sanitation scandal, ‘Operação Carne Fraca’, which broke last March, leading more than 70 countries to impose some kind of trade restriction on Brazilian meat products.
