In brief: Mexico

* The Mexican association of automobile producers (Amia) has reported that the country’s light automobile production reached 3.77m units in 2017, an 8.9% year-on-year increase and a new record high. An Amia report noted that 3.1m light vehicles produced in Mexico were exported last year, a 12.1% year-on-year increase and another new record figure. The record production and export figures were hailed by Amia’s president, Eduardo Solís, who noted that these were achieved despite the reigning uncertainty regarding the future of the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta) that is currently being renegotiated by Mexico, the US, and Canada. Notably, the Amia report points out that Mexican light vehicles exports to the US, Mexico’s main auto sector export market, reached 2.33m units last year, a 9.4% increase compared with 2016 and representing 75.3% of total exports.
