A litmus test

Regional elections in Peru tend to be highly localised affairs that have little impact on national politics. They have been dominated by regional political parties, with national parties normally failing to play a leading role. However, in the wake of the current political crisis affecting the national PPK government led by President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, who in December 2017 barely survived an impeachment motion against him it the opposition-controlled national congress, this year’s regional elections are seen as a political litmus test of the electorate’s level of support for the national government and opposition parties.
