ZEEs ready for lift-off says the PRI

On 18 December 2017 Mexico’s President Peña Nieto signed a decree creating two more of the so-called special economic zones (ZEEs), one in Salina Cruz, in the southern state of Oaxaca, and another in Progreso, in the eastern state of Yucatán. This takes the number of officially decreed ZEEs to five, of the seven that the current Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) federal government planned to establish before its six-year terms ends in December 2018. The other three are in the Pacific port of Lázaro Cárdenas-La Unión, straddling the border between the states of Michoacán and Guerrero; in the port of Chiapas, next to the Guatemalan border (in the eponymous state); and the Coatzacoalcos-Ciudad del Carmen corridor (in the southern states of Campeche and Tabasco).
