In brief: Venezuela

Venezuela: Venezuelan media has reported that the Mesa de la Unidad Democrática (MUD) main opposition coalition has decided not send representatives to the next round of the political dialogue process it has been holding with the government led by President Nicolás Maduro to try to find a solution to Venezuela’s political crisis, scheduled to take place today (18 January) in the Dominican Republic (DR). According to the media reports, the MUD has decided not to attend the new dialogue round in rejection of the recent accusations made by Interior Minister Néstor Reverol that the members of the political opposition had links to and provided information on the whereabouts of Oscar Pérez, a former police officer who led a small armed insurgent group seeking to oust the Maduro government and who was killed during a 15 January security forces operation in Caracas. The operation in which Pérez and four of his followers were killed has been denounced by local and international human rights groups as an extrajudicial execution after videos emerged on Venezuelan social media of Pérez denouncing that he had tried to surrender to the security forces but was not allowed to do so and was forced into a gunfight.
