LatinNews Regional Monitor: Brazil & Southern Cone - 19 January 2018

In brief: Brazil

*A report by Brazil’s national association of journalists (Fenaj) found that the incidence of violence against journalists was down 39% in 2017 compared with 2016. In 2017, 99 cases were reported in Brazil, down from 161 the previous year. Another piece of good news is only one of the 2017 attacks happened while the journalist was at work. But the report still flagged up some causes for concern including: a high risk of “generalised violence” such as aggressions, threats or lawsuits with the aim of undermining freedom of expression; the risk of censure; and the threat of dismissal for those who spoke negatively against influential figures.
