US appoints new Argentina ambassador

Haiti: On 18 January the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that it was withdrawing Haiti from the list of countries which can apply for seasonal-work visas, the H-2A and H-2B visas. The DHS cited “historically (…) high levels of fraud and abuse and a high rate of overstaying” as the main reason for its decision. The announcement comes less than a week after US President Donald Trump reportedly referred to Haiti as a “shithole country” and questioned why the US should allow immigration from the country. Trump later denied using that term. The inclusion of Haiti into the seasonal-work visa programme was part of a small-scale effort to aid Haiti’s recovery after the devastating 2010 earthquake by allowing temporary employment in the US. In addition to Haiti, Belize was also withdrawn from the list of countries which can qualify for these visas. In the case of Belize, the DHS cited human trafficking concerns.
