BRAZIL: Brazil’s unhappy new year

2018 looks uncertain for Brazil. Despite forecasts pointing to an economic recovery, opinion polls suggest Brazilians remain gloomy. Political instability from ‘Operation Car Wash’, which targeted senior figures from all major parties, has led to a disenchantment with politics, giving rise to extremist views. The key question over the coming months will be whether improvements in the economy will affect positively the mood of the electorate and lead to a renewal in the country’s politics or if anger at the establishment and increased radicalisation will spoil economic growth.
