A campaign launched by Transparencia por Colombia, the local branch of international anti-corruption NGO Transparency International (TI), and the Misión de Observación Electoral (MOE), an association of civil society groups, is seeking to hold Colombian politicians to account over the financing of their registration campaigns for the 2018 presidential race. Under Colombian law, one of the routes for registering as a presidential candidate is through the collection of a minimum number of signatures of support, equivalent to 3% of the total number of votes cast in the previous presidential election. For 2018, the required figure is 396,286 signatures. Yet there is little official monitoring of the finances used to collect signatures. A campaign by Transparencia por Colombia and the MOE, with the hashtag #DeDondeSalióLaPlata (‘Where did the money come from?’), is calling on the candidates to voluntarily publish their accounts online.End of preview - This article contains approximately 1072 words.
