In brief: Ecuador

Ecuador: The Costa Rica-based Inter-American Court of Human Rights (Corte-IDH) has rejected a request for precautionary measures against Ecuador, made by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR). On 4 February, over 13m Ecuadoreans voted in a national plebisicite, which contained seven questions, one of which concerned the restructuring of the council of citizen participation and social control (CPCCS), a body with the constitutional power to appoint the highest authorities of control and transparency in the state. The electorate voted 'yes' to all seven questions. The IACHR aimed to block the propsoed restructuring of the CPCCS, which would remove current members and create a transitional council, arguing that it may conflict with democracy. The Corte-IDH has overruled the IACHR’s request, with four votes in favour and two against, but also reminded Ecuador of its obligation to comply with the American Convention on Human Rights. Via his official Twitter, Ecuador's President Lenín Moreno declared the decision a "triumph for the rights and will of the Ecuadorean people".
