HONDURAS: Continuity – but to whose benefit?
Having taken office for a second consecutive term on 27 January under rather inauspicious circumstances, President Juan Orlando Hernández has indicated that he will make only gradual changes to his conservative cabinet. The general hue of the government’s export-oriented liberal economic policy also appears set to remain largely unchanged. This will please a certain set of private investors, particularly the US-facing manufacturing sector. However, the left-wing opposition – which continues to contest Hernández’s election victory – argues that he is governing in favour of a very narrow business elite, while failing the vast majority of Hondurans, well over half of whom remain mired in poverty, under-employment and insecurity.
