GUYANA: Off to court

The territorial dispute between Guyana and Venezuela, under which Venezuela claims nearly 160,000 square kilometres of Guyanese territory to the west of the Essequibo river, has been referred to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) by United Nations (UN) Secretary General Antonio Guterres. The move has been welcomed by Guyana but rejected by Venezuela.
