In brief: Chile

Chile: A total of 30 vehicles were destroyed in arson attacks on 16 February in three communes in the southern Biobío and Araucanía regions - Los Álamos, Los Sauces, and Santa Bárbara - where the indigenous Mapuche lay claim to ancestral lands. In two of the attacks, perpetrators have been identified as members of the radical Mapuche organisation Coordinadora Arauco Malleco (CAM). Interior Minister Mario Fernández deemed these attacks “serious criminal offences”, due to the extent of physical destruction, the level of organisation, and the use of weapons. In a public statement, he declared that “the government, the prosecution authorities and the police force are working as a whole” to find and punish those responsible, adding that these attacks “will not go unpunished”. Last month, a local private-sector lobby group, Multigremial de La Araucanía, released a report claiming that there were 60 arson attacks in the three regions that make up the Araucanía area during 2017, with a total of 89 lorries set alight.
